Start Learning How to Draw Flowers Online Today! Learning how to draw flowers is one of the first things we learn to do as children. We draw a straight line for a stem, a circle for the middle, and a few teardrop petals around it. These simple cartoon flowers represent beauty, happiness, and giving. Everyone loves flowers-- in a vase or on a paper, they can brighten anyone’s day. |
Learning how to draw realistic flowers will take a little more time, but you can do it! It starts with observation. Looking at a sunflower, you see the brown center whirl, which is made up of individual seeds aligned in a circular pattern. The stems are thick! It takes strength to hold up that lovely head! The green of the leaves is a beautiful contrast with the golden yellow of the petals. Notice they don’t always lay flat, but curl inward and sometimes backward. When Van Gogh painted his sunflowers, you can know he spent a lot of time marveling at the complexity and intricacy of each part of the flower. Pansies always look to me like happy faces. The yellows, purples, and blues of the flowers and their layered pattern are vibrant and joyful. Another purple beauty is the Iris, which is tall and elegant. The leaves are spikes ending in tapered points. As I look out into my yard I can see a Magnolia tree in full bloom. Magnolia flowers are very large, with a heady scent that you can smell yards away. The creamy white petals are waxy and strong, and the center is a spiky oval shape protruding outwards. They are stunning up close, and from a distance. More exotic flowers like the serene white lotus, or the Egyptian blue lotus, represent calm, hope, and peace. They grow out of stems from underwater, and are striking with their tapered petals and large, flat leaves. Another gorgeous exotic flower is the Bird of Paradise. From a plain stem, there is an explosion of dazzling orange and vivid plum-colored petals poking out horizontally; it gets my vote for the most avant garde flower. Most people love roses the best. Drawing a rose is a matter of mastering the layered look of those soft velvety petals in whatever shade you prefer. Recently, I saw a bouquet of white and black roses. Turns out the black ones were painted at the florist. So, whether you want to draw the traditional red rose, which says love without a word, or a ultra modern black and white arrangement, you can’t go wrong learning to draw a rose.
