August Renoir painted the beautiful and relaxed cat in many of his paintings. One painting, called the Sleeping Girl and Cat is a lovely example of the curled up creature doing what it does most: sleeping.

Cats are the symbols of laziness or relaxation to some cultures because cats sleep almost 20 hours each day. This makes it pretty easy if you want to learn how to draw a cat. Cats that sleep make good models! This goes for big cats as well as your own kitty. If you go to a zoo, you will almost always see the big cats sleeping.

If you want to practice how to draw a lion or how to draw a tiger, going to the zoo would be a great idea. Up close, you can see the beautiful fur, the giant paws, and their muscular bodies.

The Sphinx, an ancient and famous Egyptian sculpture shows the pharaoh’s head on the body of a lion. True to form, the lion is laying down!

The best way to learn how to draw cat eyes, is to spend some time studying the real thing. Holding your relaxed kitty, look into those eyes. You will notice the vertical pupil right away. Also note the color so you can replicate it in your cat drawing. My cat's eyes are a gold-green color. They seem to get bigger if he's playful.

If your cat is sleeping and you can't study his eyes, try looking at the paws. If you want to know how to draw a cat paw, think of it as a group of circles. To see the circles, dip your cat's paw in water and study the print it makes on a piece of paper. He will probably wake up then, and you can go back to studying his eyes!
